Dr. Khaled A. Mahdi, is the Secretary General of Kuwait’s Supreme Council for Planning and Development, the National Counterpart of UNDP’s Country Program in Kuwait, and is a member on several high-level government boards and committees, such as the Public Authority for Industries, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Researches, the Public Housing Authority, and the National Fund for SME, the Ease of Doing Business and Competitiveness Committee, and the Economic and Fiscal Reform Committee.

Dr. Mahdi steers Kuwait’s medium and long-term national development efforts towards achieving the State’s Vision; “New Kuwait 2035” and chairs the national SDGs 2030 permanent standing committee. In 2016, he established the Kuwait Public Policy Center (KPPC) and its Nudge Unit, reporting directly to him. He also oversees the three other in-house research centers: The National Knowledge Economy Center (NKEC), the National Sustainable Development Observatory (NSDO) and the National Development Research Center (NDRC).

Earlier this year, Dr. Mahdi has commissioned Oxford Economics to produce Kuwait’s first Macro-Economic Model, and has co-hosted the launch from Kuwait of the IPIECA’s report “the Mapping the Oil and Gas Industry to the SDGs: An Atlas”, and the World Energy Outlook 2018’s report of the International Energy Organization. During his current tenure, Dr. Khaled developed several strategic partnerships with local, regional and international organizations in support of enhancing longer term knowledge and capacity development.

Dr Mahdi was an Associate Professor in the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University where he co-authored more than 65 publications and co-founded SYNERGY, a complex system research group. He also served as an Advisor for the Kuwait University strategic office and the Minister of Planning and Development Affairs office. He has a BSc from the University of Toronto, Canada, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University, USA. He is a Certified Consultant Engineer (CEng), a Project Management Professional (PP)and PRINCE2, and a certified GCC Arbitrator.
